The Lviv Opera and Ballet
Theatre, with its rich and picturesque sculpture, was constructed in
1897-1900 in the Viennese neo-Renaissance style.
Many stars of Ukrainian,
Russian and world opera have appeared here, such as Enrico Caruso,
Mattia Battistini, Solomeya Krushel’nits’ka, Alexander Mishuga and
others and most of the better known operas and ballets are regularly
performed here as well as some exciting newer works.

This historic theatre
building was once the biggest in Europe, and is the oldest theatre in
Ukraine
. The
Drama Theatre has a national theatre company with an extensive
repertoire currently including some 40 classic and modern works. Among
these are the famous works of Shakespeare “Romeo and Juliet” and
“Hamlet”, Flober’s “Madam Bovary”, “Marusya Churay” by L. Kostenko and Dostoyevsky’s
“Idiot”.
