The
sacred heritage in Lviv
In 13th -14th centuries L’viv had
ten Orthodox
churches
and monasteries,
three
Armenian churches, two
Catholic churches, a mosque and
a synagogue. Many have survived to the present day and are
now open to the public.
St. George Cathedral

The cathedral of St.George the Dragonslayer is
the center of Halychyna Church Metropolis. It is built on
Sviatoyurski hill and become one of the most beautiful architectural complexes in
Ukraine
. Now the complex includes: St.George Cathedral,
Metropolitan’s Palace, capitular houses,
bell-tower,
and the fence with two gates: one “from the market“, the other one “from the city”. The church is
lavishly decorated with stone carvings, in particular with monumental
sculptural masterworks. The bell-tower has the oldest masterpiece of
Ukraine
foundry – the bell was cast in 1314 by the craftsman Yakiv Skora.

was being constructed
for one hundred years. With
its architectural styles Latin Cathedral
ranged from Gothic through Renaissance to Baroque, The
interior
of the Cathedral
has a number
of masterpieces: sculptures and carvings, frescos of walls and the
ceiling, stained glass.
Boims’
Chapel

The building reminds of a small church erected in accordance to the best
traditions of Ukrainian architectural arts. Sculptural decoration of its
exterior and interior is very rich. Citizens of Lviv tell, that Christ
statue which is here
– is one of not many in the world which shows that Christ is sitting.

church is reverted
to its original appearance of a temple that has one nave and is
surrounded by the fence with the three-arch belfry. Now there is a

This building
was built in
the Renaissance
style
but accomplished
by
the Manneristic facade. The
elaborated
interior of the church is decorated with 16 wooden altars and frescos.
The Baroque rotunda over the well in the yard is of interest.

The
corner

Pidvalna,

This church
was built of
large white stone
blocks; its walls were lavishly embellished by Tuscan pilasters and Greek
Doric stone friezes. The complex is the focal point of the Orthodox
Church in L’viv.
Chapel
of Three Prelates

The chapel
is rectangular in its foundation, without bearing pillars, and topped by
three domes that are borne on the complicated system of arches.
Korniakt’s
tower
(1572-1578, arch. P.Barbon)
The tower was used as a belfry and a guardhouse.
On the order
of a rich
merchant
of Lviv – K.Korniakt,
a huge bell,
2 m in diameter,
was forged; it was called
Kyrylo. From its very beginning this Renaissance building dominated in
the silhouette of Lviv and up till now it remains the architectural
symbol of the city.
Dominican
Church

The church is one of the most grandiose Baroque
buildings in the city. Its
interior
is decorated
with
18 wooden sculptures
of
the sanctimonious
persons
of St.Dominic
order. Nowadays, there are concerts of orphan music in
the church.

St. Kazimier church
was constructed in 1656-1664 for the Reformatory
order. Today it is the Church named after the blessed father Klymentiy
Sheptytsky and
